Haddonfield Boys Winter Track NJSIAA Group 1 State Champions

Haddonfield, led by double-winner and record breaker Greg Pelose, and Old Bridge, behind Rey Rivera and its throwers, won team titles and Brandon Tubby and Jake Konig threw down stunning victories at the NJSIAA Groups 1-4 Track and Field Championships on Friday at the Bennett Center in Toms River.

MORE: FULL RESULTS OF THE MEET

In the Group 1 meet, Pelose was sensational for Haddonfield. He won the 1,600 in a Group 1 and school record 4:16.74, won the 800 in 1:56.49, and placed second in the 3,200 in 9:32.06 to help his team win its second straight title, 55-46 over runner-up Weequahic. It's the 9th title overall for Haddonfeld, which is tied for 5th most in state history for a boys program.

The Boston University-bound Pelose had plenty of help from a pair of rising freshman stars, Luke Colehower and Derek Gess. Colehower won the 400 in a NJ #5 49.91, and ran on the runner-up 4x400 and Gess was 4th in both the 1,600 (a school freshman record 4:23.12) and the 800 (2:01.50), and ran on the runner-up 4x400.

The Group 4 meet was dominate by Old Bridge, which outscored runner-up Hunterdon Central, 46-24, for its second state title and first since 2008.

Leading the charge for Old Bridge was Rivera, throwers Dominic Walton and Brandon Davis, Gerard D'Ambrosio, and Kenny Brakoh.

Rivera, a junior who won the 800 at the Meet of Champions last spring, won the 800 in a Group 4 record 1:54.56. Walton threw a bug PR of 57-4 1/2 to win the shot put and Davis was second (55-8 1/4). Brakoh was 4th in the 400 and split 50.5 on the winning 4x400 (3:25.77) and D'Ambrosio was 4th in the 3,200 (9:26.07).

Old Bridge broke open a close meet with the 1-2 from Walton and Davis, who teammates have nicknamed the "Splash Brothers.''

"We all work hard, on the track and in the field everyday so we could win this,'' said Walton. "It's nice for us to get 1-2 in the shot and help the team win.

Two of the two performances were delivered by Konig of Freehold Township and Tubby of Hillsborough.

Konig, who looked to be too far behind Aaron Groff of Cherry Hill East with 800 to go, mounted a furious come back, capped off by a 59.5 final 400 as he blasted his way to the front on the bell lap on hsi way to a the biggest victory of his career in the Group 4 3,200. Koning stopped the clock at 9:15.49, a huge PR. Groff was second in 9:16.09.

In the Group 4 1,600, the Northeastern-bound Tubby ripped a 2:04.7 final 800 and a 60.6 last 400 on his way to smashing the Group 4 meet record with a winning time of 4:15.17, the fastest time by a New Jersey boy this season.
