Coaches

Brian Makinson.


Head Coach

Biography:

Brian Makinson has served as the Head Boys Winter and Spring Track Coach at Haddonfield Memorial High School since 2014. 

Under his leadership, the winter track team has captured 2 State Relay Group 2 Championships in 2025 and 2026, 6 South Jersey Group 2 Sectional Championships in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2025, and 2026, and 6 Group 2 State Championships in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2025, and 2026. In recognition of his success and leadership, Coach Makinson was named the South Jersey Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2017.

During the outdoor season, his teams have also experienced tremendous success, winning 7 county championships, 3 South Jersey Group 2 Sectional Championships in 2015, 2016, and 2025, and the Group 2 State Championship in 2015.

Makinson earned his degree from Rowan University, where he competed on the track and field team for four years. In addition to coaching, he is a mathematics teacher at Haddonfield Memorial High School.

 
 

Matt Cieslik.


Assistant

Biography:

Matt Cieslik has served  as Head Coach at Haddonfield since 2023, originally as Co-coach with Nick Baker, and also served as a volunteer assistant at HMHS. He previously led the Paul VI and Cherry Hill East Cross country teams, coaching Cherry Hill East to its first State Group 4 title in 2014, and serving as an assistant on the Paul VI team that won the Meet of Champions in 1994. He was a standout runner for Paul VI, and a member of its 1989 Meet of Champions winning team.   Coach Cieslik also leads the distance runners during the winter and spring track seasons.

John Costantino.


Assistant

Biography:

Coach Costantino is a 1984 graduate of Paul VI High School, where he lettered in both football and track for the Eagles.  The 2024 season will be his fifth season coaching running backs at Haddonfield Memorial High School.  Coach Costantino has nearly 30 years of coaching experience.  He started his coaching career in 1992 at St. Joe’s Prep in Philadelphia.  He coached at St. Joe until 2009.  He then spent three seasons coaching at Camden Catholic before returning to SJ Prep in 2013 until 2018.  John resides in Haddon Township with his son Samuel and daughter Julia.  John also is the owner of Primo Builders LLC which is proud to be a supporter of Haddonfield football.

Gary Williams.


Assistant

Biography:

Gary Williams, a retired teacher and administrator, has dedicated over four decades to the
sport of track and field, serving as a head, assistant, or volunteer track coach for 42 of the past
46 years. His coaching career began in 1980 at Shawnee High School where he served as Head
Winter Track Coach and Assistant Spring Track Coach. He later volunteered as an assistant
coach at Seneca High School from 2003 – 2007 and has been a member of the Haddonfield
coaching staff for the past 14 years.
During his tenure at Shawnee, Coach Williams led the winter track team to back-to-back State
Relay Championships in 1991 and 1992, earning Coach of the Year honors in 1991. He also
served as an assistant coach on Shawnee’s only outdoor State Champion team in 1992. Among
the standout athletes he coached during this time was Ed Loges, who captured the Meet of
Champions title in the 55-meter hurdles indoors and the outdoor State Championship in the
110-meter hurdles. He also coached Jason LaBarbara to both a state championship and a Penn
Relays title in the javelin.
At Seneca High School, Coach Williams continued his success, guiding the indoor shuttle hurdle
team to a state championship in the school’s inaugural year of competition. The shuttle team
also earned a second-place finish at the 2006 Nike Indoor Nationals, missing the top spot by
just .03 seconds. During his time at Seneca, he coached Kevin Gaunt to both indoor and
outdoor individual state championships in hurdles.
At Haddonfield, Coach Williams continued to develop individual state champions including Carly
Bonnet in the intermediate hurdles and Seamus Glennon in the javelin. As an assistant coach,
he has taken great pride in contributing to the sustained success of the Haddonfield Winter and
Spring Track and Field programs. He credits much of this experience to the opportunity to
coach alongside outstanding colleagues, including Nick Baker, Brian Makinson, Kyle Williams,
Matt Cieslik, and the Haddonfield Girl’s Track and Field coaching staff.
Coach Williams resides in Tabernacle, NJ with his wife of 51 years, Ingrid, whose support has
allowed him to continue pursuing his passion for coaching and mentoring student athletes.
