Post Season Championship Races for the 2020 Season

This year, we anticipate that our championship meets will be limited to top 7 runners due to social distancing restrictions. We expect to know for sure (it is possible that the number is expanded to 10 runners) and to be able to share post-season details (including our roster) after the October 26th meet. More information to follow.

  • Wednesday November 4th: Meet @ WD 4:00 Start Time (limited to top 7)
  • Tuesday November 10th: Championship Meet @ WD 4:00 Start Time (limited to top 7)

Looking Ahead Beyond XC....

Our team members should be very proud of their progress this season!  Our team members worked hard at practices and pushed themselves to improve at the meets.

We encourage our team members to write down their best times from the season to celebrate their progress and look ahead to setting goals for future seasons!! They should be proud of their consistency and any drops in their time on the Pennypacker course.

Looking Ahead...

WINTER RUNNING: Many of our runners continue to train during the non-competitive winter running club, which occurs between cross country and track.  This club is facilitated by Mrs. Barranger and Mrs. Papa.

SPRING TRACK: Mrs. Cannaday and Mrs. Baker are co-head coaches for the spring track season and look forward to seeing many of our runners compete in individual running events, relay events, and field events including jumps and throws in the spring.  We anticipate having a mid-February interest meeting in preparation for our late-March start to the season.

NEXT FALL: We look forward to seeing many of our runners return for the 2021 season! We will share information in June about preparations for the 2021 season.

First Meet & Oct/Nov Schedule

Updated on 06/10/2022

Parents -

We are very excited for our runners’ first meet this week. There has been a time change for the meet: Runners arrive at 3:45 @ Pennypacker Park for the 4:30 meet.

Runners must arrive wearing a mask and with completed covid-19 forms and a labeled water. Returning runners should come in their black Haddonfield track t-shirt. New runners should come in Haddonfield gear or black shirts, if possible. Our hope is that we can get track t-shirts passed out to the runners before the race - they just arrived to our classroom on Friday. :)

We anticipate as many as 150 HMS participants on Wednesday and need your support with setting our runners up for successful competition AND effective social distancing measures.   Please read the notes below:

Looking Ahead....

Please see the schedule below with our anticipated October and November schedule!

October and November HMS XC 2020 Schedule

We have many meets on the schedule - a few more than an average season.  Going into October, our runners have the opportunity to race twice a week - if students need to miss a meet, that is OK!

Please let us know if you have any questions!

One final and important announcement:

Parents: Please make sure you are signed up for text messages. We do not have the ability to add you on our end. Sign up for text messages by texting the number 81010 with the message: @hmsxc6 OR @hmsxc7 OR @hmsxc8.

Parents: please support us with ensuring the covid 19 screening forms (texted daily) are completed daily and that athletes are coming with masks to practice.  We are required to turn athletes away from practice if these are not in place. We thank you in advance for helping us to ensure these new procedures run smoothly.

September 2020 Schedule

Updated on 06/10/2022

Hi Team!

We can't wait to see you digitally next week and in person the week after! :) Once students are cleared by the nurse's office, they will be added to our google classroom for communication.  Please also see the links in the previous post to join the remind text messaging account for the team.

9/14 Update- We will continue to add students to our google classroom and google meet invites each day as new students are being added to the roster daily at this time.  We know that parents and athletes are anxious to be added to the google classroom, but we thank you in advance for your understanding that we cannot do so until a student is cleared by the nurse's office and added to the roster.  While you and your child wait for clearance to be added to the roster, please check out this website for detailed information.

Linked below is our September schedule to start the season! Please read it thoroughly for details about practice locations, times, and expectations.

9/14 Update- We will start meeting in-person with students on 9/17.  Please check the schedule below. Also, please ensure that the HMS XC Team COVID Form is filled out daily if the student will be attending in-person practices with the coaches on that date.  HMS XC TEAM COVID SCREENING FORM LINK - CLICK HERE

HMS XC 2020 September Schedule

We will post the October/November schedule later this month (though anticipated meet dates are listed in the previous post).

You will see digital meetings to begin the season, followed by in-person practices. We will use a combination of in-person practices at HMS and Pennypacker Park to be able to introduce the race course to our team (as well as to use our home course for workouts.) You will also see that you can look ahead to races later in the season - we have ten meets on our schedule once our competitive season begins on September 30th!

See you soon!

About the 2020 HMS XC Season

Updated on 06/10/2022

Looking Ahead to the 2020 Season:

We are very much looking forward to seeing our team this fall! We know that many of you are anxiously looking ahead to fall plans and we will continue to share details as we are able to have them for you!

Specific times/dates of practices and safety precautions for the season will follow as we get closer to the season.  Below, we are sharing our tentative plans:

In September:

  • Students who have turned in the necessary medical paperwork will be approved by the nurse’s office and added to the roster.

  • As students are added to the roster, they will be added by the coaches to a “Fall 2020 Cross Country Team” google classroom.  (In the past, students were able to view the lists hung around the school, but with this year’s safety precautions, students can check google classroom to see when they have an invitation to join the team classroom.)

Week of September 8th:

  • We anticipate that this week will be remote/digital. We will provide workouts digitally for student athletes and will set up optional google meets for team meetings and check-ins for coaches.

Week of September 14th:

  • We will begin to hold in-person practices. More details to come. Expect that practices will be held slightly later than last year's times to accommodate for students getting to the location after their online school day ends at 3:15.  We anticipate a 3:45pm practice start time at HMS OR HMHS - more likely we plan to meet at HMHS flagpole so that we can take advantage of using the Pennypacker Park home course.

Meet Schedule (late September/ October / and early November):

We have a schedule of 9 meets! They will be earlier than anticipated. As of now, ALL TEAM MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO COMPETE IN THE 9 HOME MEETS BELOW! We will provide details if anything changes regarding safety measure of meets.

Stay connected with team communication for 2020 (this is especially important for this year!):

  • We will still post announcements in the google classroom and twitter accounts and morning announcements. It may be helpful for students to have google classroom downloaded on their phones and to set up their alerts to receive push notifications from the group.

  • You should also sign up for text message updates to be texted directly to you from the coaches. Please sign up by grade level with your full name by texting the number 81010 with the message:

 @hmsxc6 for grade 6 students/families (or go to https://remind.com/join/hmsxc6)

 @hmsxc7 for grade 7 students/families (or go to https://remind.com/join/hmsxc7)

 @hmsxc8 for grade 8 students/families (or go to https://remind.com/join/hmsxc8)

Program philosophy The middle school cross country program exposes the team members to distance training and racing at the 1.5 mile distance. Students of all ability levels and experience are welcome to become part of the program. They will be challenged to steadily progress in their training and improve in their performances.  We do not expect athletes to train prior to the season, but since many team members have asked how to best prepare, we have an optional summer training plan available here for guidance:  https://tinyurl.com/HMSXCSummer2018  (this is last year's link, but no changes were made, other than calendar dates)

Communication Updates will also be provided here on the "team news" tab on this website. Please follow us on twitter for updates, as well: @HMSTrackXC  All team members and parents are asked to follow the Remind account (formerly known as Remind101). We will text the schedule weekly and any reminders or announcements, as needed.

Remind Account Sign Up: Sign up for text message updates to be texted directly to you from the coaches. Please sign up by grade level with your full name by texting the number 81010 with the message:

Permission and Medical Packet is due to the nurse's office before practicing with the team (please see additional details at the bottom of this note regarding required medical paperwork and online registration).  Newcomers are always welcome to join the team anytime during the season, but please understand that after the start of the season we need to allow for processing time for the team nurse and team doctor to clear the student to practice.

> Link to Sports Forms (please turn in to the HMS nurse's office)

**Please note that Impact Concussion Testing is NOT required for the middle school team**

Preparing for the Season: Training before the season is not expected for the team; most team members are new to running at the first practice. As an option for those who have asked how to prepare themselves for the season, this schedule is being provided that offers three levels for athletes to work with the goal of increasing mileage/time spent running. (linked above)

Practices: Weekly schedules will be posted on this site, twitter, google classroom, morning announcements and remind text messaging.  We will have a combination of practices at the middle school and the high school. We anticipate that the times will be slightly later than in past years due to the hybrid/online schedule: times TBD.

Home Meets- Team members meet at Pennypacker Park picnic table area (near the baseball field/small parking lot in the park) by 3:45. The times will be earlier than in the past because we will be racing middle-school only race time will be 4:00 - an hour earlier than last year.  The  middle school course is 1.5 miles within the park.  It is at the officials discretion, based on number of athletes running, whether the girls and boys race together in one race or in two separate races.  This is unknown until race time. (A note about parking: Please park in the Bancroft/Hopkins Pond lots.  The small lot at the course fills up, and it will be blocked off for parking shortly before 4:00, since the middle school race course runs along the lot entrance.)

Map of Course:  Map of Pennypacker Park HMS XC Home Course (1.5 miles)

If you are unable to wear your shirt to a meet, please wear any Haddonfield gear or our school red/black colors, if possible.

Running/Clothing: Wear supportive running shoes to prevent injuries. Bring extra sweats to keep warm in the later part of the season. Bring a labeled or identifiable water bottle to all practices and meets. Also bring a mask to all practices and meets - they will be required during team meetings, etc. but with they will not be required during workouts or racing. More safety details to follow.

Practice/ Meet Cancellations: In the event of rain or inclement weather, cancelations will  be announced to the students before the end of the school day.  This will occur over the HMS school announcements.  Cancelations and/or changes in scheduling will also be posted on twitter (@HMSTrackXC) and Remind text messaging system as well as within our google classroom.
